| THE MEANING OF THE GREAT SPIRIT HEAR ME PENDANT | |||||||||||||||||||||
|
The calumet of the
Native Americans, better known as the peace
pipe, is almost a universal symbol. And an
excellent symbol it is, when understood. In the early days, most contact by white men with the ceremony of the pipe dealt with peace talks or treaty talks and, because of this, was dubbed the peace pipe by them. But to the Native American, it was more - much more. It was a BRIDGE TO HEAVEN! A direct line of contact to the GREAT SPIRIT. It was holy and sacred. And still it was more! When used on any occasion when there were two or more persons, it was a pledge that only truth would be spoken, that those involved would be respected. The total concept of the Holy pipe probably cannot be fully comprehended, for it is vast. It is love. It is honor, respect, gratitude and reverence. It is faith and hope. It is a recognition of the oneness of all things! It is the very essence and embodiment of life on a universal scale, not just earthly! Designed into "GREAT SPIRIT, HEAR ME" pendant are the symbols of all that is good.
When you place "GREAT
SPIRIT, HEAR ME" on your person, you are wearing
a prayer, a It is a statement that peace is possible and desirable and that you are an active participant in the quest for peace! May you always EXPERIENCE THE FEELING of Peace! |

| THE "GREAT SPIRIT HEAR ME" STORY | |||||||||||||||||||||
|
Several days after completing my sculpture of the
peace pipe, which is named “The Offering”, I had a dream. I awakened
about 3am one night with this image and the instructions to make this
pendent as a New Universal Peace Symbol. I got up immediately and
recorded the image, but since I do not draw with pen or pencil, I simply
smeared warm clay on a piece of Formica. As I constructed the image I
kept trying to put seven feathers on it although the dream version only
had five. Now, I am a sculptor not a jeweler, and while I can do some
fine detailing on a model, I find it impossible to sculpt objects this
small, especially hands, feathers and a peace pipe, so I took the
concept to a professional Jeweler and had him create it for me. I liked the design so well that I had T-shirt designed also . One day I received a call from a friend of a friend, a man I had never met, but he said he was going to be in my neighborhood and asked if he could stop by . Of course, I agreed and I decided to give him a T-shirt with the design on it. Also, I was wearing one. After all the formalities of introducing one another, my new acquaintance proceeded to tell me he had been living the past 20 years with the Navaho Indians on their reservation. He himself was a Whiteman. After laying this information on me, he asked me to explain my Great Spirit, Hear Me design, which I attempted to do, but it was a feeble attempt, beyond stating it came as a dream. After making a ridiculous attempt to justify it, he broke in and said “Stop, let me tell you what it means from a Native American standpoint! I was very eager to hear this. He spoke: “The circle represents the Universe. The seasons, all life! The cross in the circle represent the paths of man, the good Red road and the bad black road, or the learning road, and indicate that these are the roads man travels, going out from the center along these two roads as far as possible, then turned and are coming back together and sharing their wisdom gained from their experiences. The mouth piece on the pipe is in the house of knowledge and the bowl is in the house of sharing. The five feathers represent mankind and are there to remind you to look deep, far and wide, with a keen eye like our brother the Eagle.” At this point I told him I thought it should have seven feathers and tried very hard to get them to fit but they never looked good. To which he stated in no uncertain terms, “You’ve been told what to do, leave it alone!” Great Spirit, Hear Me is more than jewelry, more than wearable art, it is wearing a prayer, it is a message to others and a reminder to yourself that peace is possible and desirable. It should be worn, as much as possible, daily to let the world know you are an advocate and promoter of peace. May you always experience the feeling of peace!
